Piñatex®, an innovative natural textile made from waste pineapple leaf fiber. The leaves are the byproduct of existing agriculture and fruit industry, which are are typically thrown away.

THE FABRIC OF THE FUTURE

Pineapple leather is about the change the whole leather industry. The plant based leather fabric is far better when it comes to sustainability. It has a quite unique and similar texture to animal skin leather. However, it takes way less resources and is way more eco friendly.

TURNING WASTE INTO PRODUCTION

Local farmers in the Philippines collect the pineapple leaves which globally produces about 13 million tons of waste. Ananas Anam uses the pineapple leaves and extracts the fibre in order to create Pinatex, which is processed to a sustainable leather.

The decortication process takes places at the farm to reduce C02 emissions. The biomass left over after removing the fibre does not become waste. It has a nutrient rich natural fertilizer for the soil which can be used as a biofuel.

After the fibers get washed and are dried, the pectin gets released from the fiber. Once the pectin is removed, the pineapple fiber becomes a soft and flexible material. The Raw Piñatex® gets shipped to Spain and processed into a leather like material creating the durability of leather.

HELPING THE FARMERS

The manufacturing process creates an extra income source for the pineapple farmers in the philippines. Farmers typically rely on seasonal work. Pinatex manufacturing process creates opportunities for second source of income. Pineapple leaves for Pinatex come from the Philippines which is the #1 country for pineapple export. Since there are many more pineapple exporting countries ananas anamas is doing their best to expand to more countries all over the world.

PINEAPPLE TO PRODUCT

Brands are looking for new ways to innovative. Not only can Piñatex be used for the apparel industry for products such as shoes, wallets, bags and beyond, the automotive industry has also started using Piñatex for their leather seats and interior decoration. Companies today are on the shift and are looking for ways to integrate environmental & social responsibility into business practices to drive impact.
